Books to Buy!: Stepfamily Life by Margaret Newman

Why it is different – and how to make it work

Stepfamily LifeDescription:

In this book, Margaret Newman, an experienced couple and family counsellor and a member of a stepfamily herself, describes challenges that members of a stepfamily usually encounter. In her experience, stepfamily life is different, and therefore different solutions are needed to get it on track – and, more importantly, to help it survive. In this reassuring and straightforward book, Margaret Newman considers a wide range of stepfamily scenarios, and gives practical suggestions as to what to do in each case to overcome any difficulties.

Stepfamily Life helps the reader to understand the dynamics of life in a stepfamily – what lies beneath the surface – and how to rationally approach each family issue concerning adults and children. Margaret Newman highlights the fact that while skills such as communication are very important, so too is self-awareness and a basic knowledge of family life.

Using case studies and the experience of working with a broad range of stepfamily situations, Margaret Newman examines problem areas and explains what is happening and what to do about it. She shows how, despite the obstacles, a happy stepfamily life can be achieved.

Present Idea No. 20: Ghostwritten by David Mitchell

Ghostwritten

Ghostwritten

Description:

David Mitchell’s electrifying debut novel takes readers on a mesmerizing trek across a world of human experience through a series of ingeniously linked narratives.

Oblivious to the bizarre ways in which their lives intersect, nine characters-a terrorist in Okinawa, a record-shop clerk in Tokyo, a money-laundering British financier in Hong Kong, an old woman running a tea shack in China, a transmigrating “noncorpum” entity seeking a human host in Mongolia, a gallery-attendant-cum-art-thief in Petersburg, a drummer in London, a female physicist in Ireland, and a radio deejay in New York-hurtle toward a shared destiny of astonishing impact.

Like the book’s one non-human narrator, Mitchell latches onto his host characters and invades their lives with parasitic precision, making Ghostwritten a sprawling and brilliant literary relief map of the modern world.

BookieMonster says:

This book is one of my top ten books of all time. All time. It’s that good. Mitchell is one of the best writers of the turn of our century, virtuoso, often crazy, but he has the talent to carry it off in spectacular ways.

In Seeing in the Dark, a poetic love letter to science and to the skies, Timothy Ferris invites us all to become stargazers. In addition, Ferris offers an authoritative and engaging report on what’s out there to be seen — what Saturn, the Ring nebula, the Silver Coin galaxy, and the Virgo supercluster really are and how to find them.

The appendix includes star charts, observing lists, and a guide on how to get involved in astronomy.
